Door Dog Exercise Pen in Good for the new puppy?

I can get a new puppy in a few weeks and I'll put in a fund for I at work. Instead of hiring a dog walker to take her to lunch Is it acceptable to put the cage next to a dog door to an outdoor decks bullpen? I do not use this method until the dog is old enough to be "maintaining that" all day, or able to go out and do business in my fenced yard. I look forward puppies to give all my garden access. Has anyone done this?
